Mechanical Specifications

Print
The following specifications are based on artwork originated in Quark and InDesign, and supplied as print ready PDFs. Please do NOT supply Quark or InDesign files, or other formats unless you have first checked with us that we accept the format.

Adverts must be created at correct full size for use – if unsure of the correct size, please check.

All images within files and the file composition itself must be CMYK. Images should be embedded within the final print file, not linked to it.

Allow 3mm bleed on all sides of the page and indicate page size using crop marks.

There should be no text or logos within 4mm of all edges from the edge of the page size. Otherwise, it risks being trimmed in the final collation and finishing of the printed copy, or we may have to reduce the overall size of your artwork. This should also be considered if the advert is going to have a border around or near the edge of the advert area.

All postscript and printer fonts (font suitcase) should be supplied with your job and embedded within the file.

Any text within vector based eps files (i.e. Adobe Illustrator, Macromedia Freehand, Corel Draw) should be converted to paths/outlines. This is to ensure no embedded fonts are omitted. To do this, or check this using Adobe Illustrator, or Adobe InDesign see box below.

If fonts are not fully embedded we will request the font suitcases from you to update the files correct for print use within the publication, or request that the artwork be re-supplied with the fonts correctly embedded, it is our decision. In cases where the deadline for artwork has expired, similar fonts will be used in place if an exact match can not be sourced.

Please note we will not delay our publications if artwork is not received from you, to the correct specification and from within the timeframe and deadlines stated.

For PDFs follow the relevant notes above and create your print optimised PDF with 3mm bleed. PDFs must be a minimum of 300dpi resolution. All file names should have .pdf appended at the end of the name (.pdf) and should be compatible with Adobe Acrobat 5.0 and upwards.

You should generate a postscript file from your design application and then create your pdf using Adobe Distiller. Do NOT export pdf files directly from your design application. Doing so gives unreliable results which will not meet our specification.

If you have any concerns regarding your artwork, please do get in touch as soon as possible to help avoid problems and delays.

Guide to converting fonts to paths/outlines by embedding fonts using Adobe illustrator from a pdf file

To check if fonts are embedded:

- Create pdf by creating postscript file. Turn this into a pdf using adobe distiller. Note: do not create pdf direct from design programme as this is not always reliable.

- Then, open the pdf in Adobe Illustrator. Does it look correct? To check all is correct select all the page items (apple key and A on a Mac, Ctrl key and A on pc). Now check to see if any fonts are missing: go to type menu along top, then check to see which fonts have a bullet next to them. If any do, you need to install the fonts on your computer. If there are no bullets next to any of the fonts then go to the type menu along the top (still with all page items selected) and click on create outlines. In more recent versions of Adobe Illustrator a warning will flash up when you open up the PDF within Illustrator. Fonts can also be checked under the type menu and, the find font option.

Once you have done this, and it all looks correct, save the file as eps (with a tiff preview) or resave it to the correct PDF specification, then send the revised file to us.
